What is arthritis?

Arthritis isn’t one single disease, but refers to joint pain or joint disease. There are over 100 types of arthritis and related conditions that damage the joints and other organs. Although many people think it is, arthritis is not a disease of aging, and occurs in people of all ages. The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis, which can damage any joint but is most likely to occur in the hands, spine, hips, and knees.

Common symptoms

Some common symptoms of arthritis are pain, swelling, stiffness, and decline in range of motion of joints. Symptoms are different for each person and can vary from mild to severe and can come and go. Some symptoms may stay the same for a long period of time while others can progress and get worse. Arthritis can cause permanent joint changes and can result in chronic pain and difficulty performing daily activities.

Treatment

Treatment of arthritis depends on several factors, including the location and level of pain, and your goals and preferences. Initial treatment typically focuses on lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy diet and exercising on a regular basis. In some cases, arthritis can be treated surgically.
